Meet Godfrey Kambewa, one of the first 2012 Students with dreams Programme graduates. Godfrey created his project “Condom Couture” to reduce the rate at which the youth in Malawian tertiary institutions contract HIV/AIDs by creating an atmosphere in which condoms were de-stigmatised, normalised and discussed openly without embarrassment.
This was done by organising shows that displayed beautiful clothes made out of fabric, condoms and condom wrappers, accompanied by entertaining condom demonstrations, powerful spoken word poetry on the need for women to have control of their bodies and sexual rights, music performances, and music and dance performances by students of the colleges
The tour, which took place in March 2013, included the following colleges: College of Medicine, Blantyre International University in Blantyre, Bunda College of Agriculture, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Lilongwe, and Domasi Teachers Training College in Zomba. With an average of 250 audience members per show, the tour reached over 1,300 people. In addition, Condom Couture created partnerships with Banja la Mtsogolo, which donated condoms for the dresses and for distribution.
“I came out feeling good about myself, I look at myself as a young innovative activist and policy maker. Throughout the process I have met a lot of great and influential people and this goes a long way in my life. I believe I will make it big in life because of the experience and the skills I have learnt in the course of running this project." reflected Godfrey upon completing his SWD project.
