As we’ve been celebrating our fifth anniversary, we knew we had to take the party to Lilongwe. We wanted our celebration there to be creative, we wanted it to be fun, and we wanted plenty of people to join with us. On 15 November 2018, that's exactly what happened. We collaborated with Zaluso Arts, which started as a Students with Dreams project in 2014, to host a special anniversary event in their Lilongwe studio, with art, live music, poetry, presentations, and interactive activities.
The stage was set in the Zaluso Arts studio garage, with live performances from Menes La Plume, founder of Tumaini Festival, George Kalukusha,singer-songwriter and founder of Pa Khonde Sessions, DJ Bubblegum, Malawi's premiere female DJ, and poet Julius “Jules” Banda. Between performances our staff gave short presentations about our programmes: Umunthu, Students with Dreams, and Make Art / Stop AIDS. They were accompanied by participants from the programmes who shared their personal experiences of the impacts our work has had in their lives.
Inside the venue, Zaluso displayed a selection of their artworks in a special exhibition, while we ran a fun photo booth on their porch; check out a selection of the pictures on our Facebook. With over 150 people attending there was plenty of opportunity to mix, mingle, and share connections, while learning a little bit about our work. The event was featured on Malawi's two biggest broadcasters- MBC and Zodiak, reaching an additional estimated 1 million people.
ArtGlo at 5 Lilongwe was part of a series of events in Malawi and internationally to celebrate our 5th Anniversary.
